From Jammu – Assisted Reproductive Technology Used In City IVF Clinic Reduces Miscarriages
31-year-old woman with a history of three abortions – spontaneous and induced – achieved a successful pregnancy with the help of advanced technology at the Indira IVF Jammu centre. Tasha, 31 (name changed) and her husband, Nayan, 35 (name changed), have been trying to have children for the last three years after their marriage.
The couple naturally conceived three times but the pregnancies were not carried to full term since Tasha miscarried two times at one and a half months, and later, had to go through an abortion at five months as the baby was found to have Down syndrome. They approached the Indira IVF centre situated in the city with their history. Panel tests checking for diseases and other reproductive health conditions were normal as well as no history of Down syndrome could be traced in their family tree.
Speaking on the role of genetics, Dr Kshitiz Murdia – CEO & Co-Founder of Indira IVF said, “In cases of abortion due to genetic anomalies, assisted reproductive technology provides a solution as each fertilised embryo can be screened to check if they are genetically normal. A technique called preimplantation genetic testing or PGT is performed before transferring the embryo to the mother’s uterus for the same purpose.”
Dr Manisha Bhagat’s team worked on the case. After ovarian stimulation, Tasha’s eggs were collected and were fertilised with her husband’s sperms. The embryos were monitored till it reached the blastocyst stage, and then tested.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Manisha Bhagat from Indira IVF Jammu said, “In Tasha’s case, we used Preimplantation Genetic Test for Aneuploidy or PGT-A. It is a genetic test performed on embryos created through IVF to screen for extra or missing chromosomes that are referred to as aneuploidy. These often fail to implant and lead to miscarriage or if implantation is successful, leads to the birth of a child with a genetic condition. Down syndrome is a genetic anomaly wherein the child is born with 47 chromosomes instead of 46; so where two chromosomes should have been present in the 21st pair, there are three. Euploids, or chromosomally normal embryos, are most likely to lead to a successful pregnancy.”
Normal embryos detected after PGT-A were then implanted in Tasha’s uterus and she is now pregnant with good values of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (BHCG).
