A lot has happened in technology and technology adoption in an incredibly compressed time and at a fast pace. And our industry was not too far from the impact either. Initially developed to aid the infertile couple, IVF has since rapidly expanded to include medical and genetic conditions, as well as fertility preservation. And while we have witnessed technological advancements in processes and treatment, we must understand the role of (artificial intelligence) AI in IVF.
AI will likely demonstrate utility in several facets of the IVF procedure. It is an opportunity for technological advancement to improve IVF success. It is multifaceted in its capability. For instance, AI may aid in selecting the best oocyte and sperm combination as well as predicting embryo quality. Besides, AI may support an IVF specialist in developing an ideal patient-specific treatment regimen to improve their conception chances.
AI is here to transform our industry – could AI have the potential to take over some of the mundane or rather jobs that require accurate attention to detail – like quality control, embryo and oocyte vitrification, and biopsy sample loading? The answer is YES. It has the power to end infuriatingly routine work that is manual and laborious. And help embryologists get rid of mental and physical exhaustion caused by sustained manual and time-consuming work. It will create time and space for embryologists to shift their focus on other tasks like ICSI, embryo biopsy, and further innovation in the field.
What’s more? We are already aware of the lack of skilled embryologists in the country, deploying AI can free up embryologists’ time from the mundane laboratory responsibilities to focus on training junior staff.
From accuracy in administrative processes to make smart informed decisions, AI is here. And the only way to progress in this challenging industry is to embrace it. It is indeed the new path but will be the next normal.
