IVF technology treats 23 years of infertility; realise parenthood dream of city-based couple
A couple married for 23 years achieved a successful pregnancy with the help of advanced technology and donor embryo at the Indira IVF Aurangabad centre. Sarita, 39 (name changed) and her husband, Raghu (name changed), were trying to have children after their marriage 23 years back but remained unsuccessful even after four rounds of IVF elsewhere before they approached the city-based Indira IVF centre.
The evaluation at Indira IVF revealed that the female partner had diminished ovarian reserve (inadequate number of eggs) with thin endometrium and the husband’s semen parameters were also poor. Along with this, Sarita also had a history of chronic hypertension, diabetes, hypothyroid, and had undergone treatment for abdominal Kochs, a type of extra pulmonary tuberculosis in the abdominal organs such as intestines. They had undergone four failed IVF treatment at other clinics before so were apprehensive of any fruitful result. However, the experienced doctors at Indira IVF consulted and motivated them to begin treatment process.
The couple’s case indicated that a self-cycle of pregnancy with their own eggs and sperms would not be possible due to the lack of the same, and would have to resort to a donor cycle. A hysteroscopic lateral wall metroplasty was performed on Sarita which is a reconstructive procedure done on the uterus, scar tissues were released and then a foley catheter was kept in her intrauterine cavity for 8 days. This was followed by injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for a faster recovery. As this was a donor cycle, embryo transfer was done with donated embryo and two good quality blastocyst embryo were transferred into Sarita’s uterus when her endometrial thickness was 8 mm. On the 16th day after transfer, a beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) test confirmed the pregnancy following which it was monitored very cautiously given the patient’s medical condition of chronic hypertension.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Dhondiram Bharti from Indira IVF Aurangabad said, “In certain cases, issues due to certain birth defects, low ovarian reserve along with ongoing medical conditions, assisted reproductive technology provides a solution. Here, patients are first treated to overcome the condition and then procedures such as embryo transfer are performed so they are able to conceive. We always advice couple to take timely treatment for complications with fertility. In this case, the couple was married for 23 years and the female patient was 39 by the time we started treatment. Due to other health conditions at this age such as hypertension, diabetes and thyroid disease, the treatment process was more complex. It is imperative to understand that treatment at right age and time increases the chances of positive result manifold.”
With all the efforts, Sarita and Raghu’s dream of becoming parents was fulfilled with a baby in the on their 5th IVF attempt and their first with a donor embryo.
